The characteristics of the members of congress are that they have become less male and less white. The amount of African Americans and Hispanic members has increased. The typical representative or senator that people picture is a middle-aged white Protestant male lawyer. But now that perception is drastically changing and more diversity is seen in terms of race, sex, and religion among the members. The process for electing members of congress is a detailed procedure. Each state has two senators, but the number of house of representatives are based upon the population of the state. Determining fair representation is a very critical factor. The Congress decides the size of the House and reapportions representatives every ten years. Candidates need to win the party primary to appear on the ballot of the general election and candidates run individual campaigns, which offers them independence from party in Congress. Once the candidate wins the general election, then he is made member of Congress, representing his/her state.
