Sorry. page 123 is an illustration plate. It is showing a driftwood scuplture. the caption is only three sentences long.

*Plate 74.* Curved branches spiralling out in all directions set off the dried bells-of-Ireland (in pale green) and poplar blossoms (in green and beige). Loquat leaves add substance at the base. Concealed behind the freestanding driftwood is a pincup for water.

it was from "The Driftwood Book", which is a 1960 text on making driftwood art crafts that was in a box of old books ready to go to goodwill. not normal reading material. but now I think I will take a look at it. It is all in black and white.

I find your question more of a provocation. It's just what I need right now.
So, here it is: Gabriel Garcia Marquez- 100 Years of Solitude!
"Only when they ordered him to put his back to the wall did Arcadio see Rebeca, with wet hair and a pink flowered dress, opening wide the door.He made an effort to get her to recognize him. And Rebeca did take a casual look toward the wall and was paralyzed with stupor, barely able to react and wave goodbye to Arcadio."

this is such a cool question!! Here goes--
"Even the jacket and slacks she had been wearing seemed to retain the cold and dampness she had felt there. Ridiculous, of course, she told herself as she touched up her makeup and brushed her hair. While standing in front of the barthroom mirror, she paused for a moment, holding the brush, and staring at it."

The book is "Nighttime is My Time" by Mary Higgins Clark.

The Serial Killer Files by Harold Schechter
page 123
Given all the shocking evidence that lust-murder has always been a component of human behavior, how is it that people have come to believe that serial killers are unique to modern times?
There are several answers.
First, a man who committed repeated acts of appaling mutilation-murder on innocent victims wasn't necessarily regarded as a criminal in past ages.

The Truth About Forever - Sarah Dessen

Up in the passenger seat, Kristy was messing with the radio, the wailing woman, now replaced by a boppy pop beat.
"Would you like another moment or two to make me insane?"
Kristy rolled her eyes.
