first u have to write the balanced equation.

2Mg + O2 --> 2MgO

now change 16 grams of O2 to moles. 16/32=0.5.

now use the formula moles/coefficient=moles/coefficient to get moles of Mg.

0.5/1 = x/2
x=1mole of Mg
