Feed a mixture of Senior Equine, beet pulp, and maxi glo. I had a severely underweight, starved horse that was given to me. Feeding twice a day with hay, she was back to normal weight in about 3 months.

It's amazing how good she looks now. My vet wanted us to feed her 3 small meals a day, but with work schedules couldn't. He said that two times a day was better than feeding her all of it at once. Good luck with yours.

Always check with your vet before altering an animals diet. Ask the vet what an ideal weight for the animal is, and have a thorough vet check. After you have received a clean bill of health, you can begin to slowly increase what you are feeding the horse. You should first treat for common internal parasites (i.e. worms). As you up the amount of food that your horse is eating, you can also add additional supplements to help strengthen her systems. Adding a multi-vitamin and a weight gaining supplement would be wise. Weight supplements can be as simple as two pumps of corn oil twice daily. Please keep in mind that adding oil is good in moderation, but adding too much oil could lead to loose manure and may reduce the digestibility and absorption of some nutrients. If you don't see a change in a few weeks, check with the vet as inablilty to gain weight can be associated with EPM and other illnesses.

Good luck!

Beet pulp. You can usually buy it at any feed store. Soak the pulp first so that it expands in the water - otherwise it can expand in the horse's digestive system and cause colic. Once it's completely saturated, mix it in with grain to feed it. In addition, plenty of good hay always helps to put weight on.

Get some beet pulp and mix it with hot/warm water as directed. They LOVE it and it puts weight on pretty fast =) just feed it with their normal grain everday (dont mix them) Also make sure her teeth are in good condition and that she doesnt have a medical condition keeping her from gaining weight. She could have worms-- so make sure she doesnt

There may be a medical reason why she is underweight. I would consult with a large animal vet. Sometimes older horses need to have their teeth floated so they can eat comfortably.

Well you don't want to do it too fast, but try free feeding alfalfa pettets, senior feed, mixed with something like gleam and gain. Also look in to feeding a all around vitamin supplement, and rice bran.
