It is simple economics. Men, based on our capitalistic economic system, can command more money.

They "earn" it. I use that term loosely because teachers and firefighters (for example) do much more good than do athletes, but. . .

A contributing favor to the lackluster attendance at WNBA games is, I believe, the significant number of parents that are turned off by the large % of lesbians in attendance.

I know many who are reluctant to take their kids (daughters especially) to the games as a result.

Many family people find it, frankly, a turn off. Sorry.

The salaries in pro sports are due to entertainment value. They aren't fair in a lot of ways. NBA basketball is more entertaining than WNBA basketball because of the amazing athleticism by the NBA players. That's not to say WNBA players are less skilled. Especially recently, I think the women's game shows better fundamentals and team play. But the women don't have flashy dunkers or as many behind the back passes, etc as the men do. Bottom line, it's a show. And people pay to see a show.

The women's game could grow if more players like Candice Parker came out. Women who are athletic, pretty, and talented. It's not fair, but that's what it will take. I think women's sports in general demand a pretty face to get more sponsorshop and marketing opportunity. Players like Sue Bird and Lisa Leslie, who are both pretty, feminine, and quality players help that image grow.

There are many examples in other women's sports as well. Look at Jeanette Lee, Eva Laurence and others for women's pool? There are many talented players, but these are the most well known.

Look at Gabrielle Reece for beach volleyball? She was a very good player, but not the best. But she was one of the prettiest, and got the sponsorships from Nike.

And the most notorious example, Anna Kournakova. She was a good tennis player, but was never an Elite player, yet she's set for life with her endorsements.

It's not just that it's a women's sport. Take hockey for example. It is finally growing in the US, but has struggled for many years. Major League Soccer still struggles to become a marketable sport in the U.S. There are just too many sports options in the American sports market.

Hopefully the market to watch women's pro basketball will grow, but until then, the salaries will not. Many of the organizations struggle to turn a profit. It's not for lack of merit, as the women's players are good. But until the public is more excited about watching the game, the salaries will not rise much.

There is a huge problem in women's marketing. I know this because I am a basketball player from Europe and there they invest more time and effort with marketing. The league in US needs some cute girls who have skills. Sex sells...it's that simple! It's no wonder that 2 years ago #1 sport in summer olympics was women's beach volleyball. The league in US just needs to try harder to promote the girls and do more cross promotions with men's teams!!!

The WNBA season is a little bit less than half of the leangth in terms of games and time frame as the NBA season. More importantly, WNBA games draw on average half of what NBA games, and generate much lower television revenues.

The old ABL was an attempt to bring the women's game more equity in that they were not entirely dependany on the NBA as the WNBA was. However, they paid too much money to entice big stars to play, the WNBA ended up getting more press coverage, and it folded.

Bottom line is, mens basketball produces a whole lot more money than womens basketball, blame the viewers, but that's just the truth.

Very simple: Women dont go to women games as they do to men games, and assistance to the games is the factor that decides how much players get paid.

the NBA makes a lot more money than the WNBA. i agree that the WNBA needs to market more. but generally, men think that womens bball is boring (slower game and only a few can dunk, etc.). i personally dont think its boring but a lot of guys think so.
