Back yard gardens usually don't have space for canning gardens (crops) so I usually advise the types the produce over longer periods of time. Indeterminate tomatoes, peppers, both sweet and hot varieties, eggplant, plants grown up on poles, or fences, like pole variety green beans, suger peas, cucumbers.
On the ground vining things like melons , pumpkins, etc., usually take to much space for the backyard garden, but bush type summer squash work well.
This fall, as you clear out the summer crops, replant with brocolli, cauliflower, lettuce, radish, onions(especially green onions). These cooler season guys also will do well in the early spring or late winter, but if they take too long, they will get in the way of the warm season crops in your area, so you might want to save them for fall.
Talk to the people at your local feed and seed, and check with your extension agent or Master Gardener program to fine tune a bit.
