I would get to see your doctor in the morning to be 100% sure.

This is a classical description of sciatica. When you injured your back you have also injured a spinal nerve root from the sciatic plexus that supplies your leg. After 2 weeks it is reasonable to see your GP. The normal management is to supply you with pain killers and refer you to physio. Generally there is no need to scan (and x-rays are now considered unhelpful) since the history is short no one would yet be looking for more significant pathology yet, the slip disc issue which so many people talk about is seldom in reality an issue.

Generally the current advise now is NOT to rest, as this has been shown to slow recovery, but to keep active avoiding lifting and stooping.

Hey buddy don´t worry ... I am not a medical person but have suffered with a similar condition for many years. Sounds like you have Sciatica. The Great Sciatic Nerve is pinched somewhere between your neck and lower back.

The nerve radiates from ther spine across the neck and shoulders, down both arms, the buttocks, across your thighs and turns to reach your feet via your calves, then onto the toes. Pain or pins and needles can be felt anywhere along its route. On occasions the lower back (in my case can go into spasm to compensate for lack of strength) resulting in what seems to be a body that is tilted to one side from neck to lower back ... very painful.

OK ... what you can do. First, relax, not easy but try to, ibuprofen really does help too, as it is an anti-inflammatory medication. I have found lots of walking relaxes the nerve and allows normality to return. Lying in bed and "lots of rest" have proven useless.

Try to excercise regularly to tone all your back muscles. Swimming is by far the best, but gentle jogging when you are able is good as is regular visits to a gym for stretching. Most importantly do not go at it in the gym like a olympian, take it real easy and take care of your problem.

Of course should you be a little overweight, this can exacerbate the problem. But excercise is the key. Golf ... no too jerky, heavy weights no ... to much stress on the back, get the idea?

Ah! one important point for me is that upon getting up be very careful for 20 - 30 mts. If you swill your face at the sink, bend from the knees as opposed to back bending. It seems fluid builds up in the spine overnight (so I was told) and early jerky movements can cause an attack. Well, it worked for me as this was a time when I had the "electric shock" across my lower back and severe lasting pain.

So, always excercise, even when you have pain, be careful of your back at ALL times, and have a good quality bed. Best advice I can give you. Do not despair you will get over this episode and learn to take care of yourself.

Hope this helps ...

The pins and needles that are going down your legs indicate that you've probably injured an intervertebral disc. You need to see a doctor (an orthopedist or neurologist) right away. This is one of those things that won't get better by itself. I'm so sorry for you, I know it hurts! Good luck.

Stay off of your legs as much as possible to rest your back.
Try sleeping on your side with knees/legs bent and a pillow tucked between them. Use a heating pad as this should help alleviate the discomfort. Meanwhile, make an appointment with your doctor.

i've experienced exactly the same problems, it's more than likely your sciatica nerve. try and rest as much as you can, don't sit in any awkward position or strain yourself...

mine lasted for 2/3 weeks, if its really annoying you get yourself to an osteopath. I totally understand how you feel, but it will get better with time.

get well soon!

You probably got what I got - a slipped disc pushing on the nerves - you need a doctor asap. I'm going to the chiropractor three times a week, because there's nothing else for it.

Sounds like a nerve entrapment or disc problem. Definitely go seek help from a licensed chiropractic physician. Good Luck!
