Ok so that might sound like a dumb question, but how do computers know? What are they tied into that makes them know when? This year for example we switched 2 weeks earlier than normal.

Updates...that makes sense...that didn't even cross my mind but you're likely right.

It date in the software. This year mine did not change because I had my Auto-Updates off. If, yours was on then it downloaded a Patch to tell it to change time. Learned that here today asking; "Did your computer change time today"?

If you have Windows XP, click on control panel in the start menu, then click on date and time, then click on time. You'll get a dialogue box. At the bottom, you should have the box for "automatically switch to daylight saving time checked." Ellie

Older computers will have to download a program to get the time to change because the one they originally have set for it is now incorrect.

the computers are feeded for upto 21st century. the data is stored in such a way that for each and every day and every time is calculated and is stored in the system which comes along with the software.

By the date, i.e. this year it happened march 11 so they know ...and sometimes they're synced with a master clock it depends...

There is a little clock fairy living in each computer that kinda twirls its wand and spreads fairy dust all around when ever its needed and boom!
