i'm going out on a limb here and guess that you mean at x = 5, y = 7 and at x = 7, y = 9 then what is relationship between x and y?

you have two data points (5,7) and (7, 9)

since you have only two points, I can relate the two with a line in the form y = mx + b

so plugging in values for x and y from the two points...

7 = m*5 + b = 5m+b ----> b = 7-5m
9 = 7m + b

substituting the first into the second...

9 = 7m + (7 - 5m)
2 = 2m
m = 1

so that y = x + b
and plugging in either point gives say...
7 = 5 + b
b = 2

so y = x + 2

i dont think that the answer is not 42 but i might be incorrect , i think that you divided away the x , is that right ?

Did you divide away an X ?
without checking the X not being 0 ? tsk tsk tsk ....

5x = 7x => 5 = 7 .....

5x = 7x => 5x - 7x = 0 => -2x = 0 thus x = 0 is a solution.
