HANDS DOWN, it's Johnny Bench!
behind him it's Carlton Fisk, and Ivan"Pudge"Rodriquez, then Yogi Berra, and Roy Campenella.

Ok well since the question was "Who is the best catcher in MLB history?" I would have to say Bench. That being said you have to agree with the guy who brings up Big Josh Gibson. From what I've learned the man was a monster. and of couse as the other guy said stats were not kept very well. So Best catcher in MLB = Bench.
Best Catcher ever = Bench or Josh Gibson.

I would say either Johnny Bench or Yogi Berra.

Bench: 389 home runs, 2-time MVP, 10 straight Gold Gloves from 1968-77, 14 time All Star.

Berra: 358 home runs, 3-time MVP including back to back in 1954-55, has 10 world series rings, and a 15 time All Star.

Both were selected as the catchers on the All-Century Team.

Overall, I would say it was Johnny Bench of the Reds. Carlton Fisk in second , Bob Boone and Yogi Berra were great as well and also Mickey Cochrane because he had decent speed and hit for a great average for a catcher. If you wanted to have this man but at the end for defensive purposes because he was not a great hitter but a great defensive catcher of the 1910's and 1920's I would go with Ray Schalk.

Hey Jesse: Good question. There's been lots of great ones: Berra, Bench, Fisk, Campanella, and we're seeing one right now, a local boy named Mike Piazza. But one guy who must have been a great catcher and a great ballplayer was Elston Howard, who played for the Yankees back in the 60's. The reason I say he was a good one was because when he came up to the majors, the Yanks moved Yogi Berra to the outfiled to make room for Howard. So if you're good enough to displace a Hall of Fame player from his position, you must be pretty good.

Joseph Patrick Mauer (born April 19, 1983) is a major league catcher in Major League Baseball for the Minnesota Twins.

He was considered by many scouts to be the best young catcher in the sport and has been said to have one of the best swings in baseball or possibly of all-time.

I think Johnny Bench is the greatest catcher. He revolutionized the postion by putting his hand behind his back so he wouldn't get hit by foul balls. It got to the point where players wouldn't steal off of him because he was so good at throwing runners out.

Johnny Bench. HE revolutionized the art of throwing out runners, put up great offensive numbers and won 3 world series titles. Not to mention rookie of the year in 1968, 10 Gold Gloves, NL MVP in 1970 and1972 and World Series MVP in'76.
