I was a print journalist for a couple decades until I recently changed professions. I enjoyed many aspects of it and disliked others, but that's standard for any job.

Frustrations include having stories mangled or killed as a journalist, and as an editor, having journalists not meet deadline or turn in substandard stories.

If you get a full-time job as a journalist, then count on either working in the newsroom or on your beat anywhere from 6 to 12 or more hours a day.

Overall, it's a great career with lots of intangible rewards. Just don't count on getting rich. Also, be prepared to live in a lot of small towns and move around a lot to advance your career because if you wait at the same paper to be promoted, you'll be a senior citizen before you're an editor.

Also, be ready to be laid off or downsized at any moment since daily newspapers are bleeding readers at an alarming rate, and that lose of income usually results in cuts in the newsroom.
