a fair number of those on the left are atheists.....

if it is meant that those who do not believe in God, have no morals, that is inaccurate as well..

if the right follows the word of God so closely, perhaps it should not judge

They believe that absence of religion leads to absence of moral structure.
Not surprising, since there is an inverse relationship between intelligence and religious belief.

Actually, an incredibly small percentage of people are actually atheist. An atheist denies that God can exist, for anyone. Not being religious, or not being sure, does not make you atheist.

But there are a large number of people who don't believe in forcing religion or moral values on others against their choice.

The reason that religious people consider "godless" an insult is because of how important and central the concept of "God" is to their world. To them, to be without god is to be without meaning or purpose or morality. They can't conceive of morals and integrity coming from any other source but God.

Back in the time when being born to married parents was a big deal, the term "bastard" held similar connotations.

The book was called "Godless" Because she compares Liberalism to a religion that equates the government with god and leaves God completely out.
Ann Coulter does not speak for the right. Just like Al Franken or Michael Moore do not speak for the left.

The problem with morality for the atheist becomes more of a lack of objective foundation for them. (As opposed to an actual deficit) But one could make a strong case for a deficit of morality being that we're seeing all these atheist teenagers pick up weapons and start shooting people in schools and turning the gun on themselves. The Bible teaches that that is the last thing one should ever do in life, but with atheists, there is no objective source to tell them such things are wrong and ought never be done. Morality for the atheist is more a subjective matter and for the younger ones among them, an instability that costs them their lives, the lives of people around them, and their souls.

If the term "godless" is used as either a slander or a thoughtful description, neither of those are an example of judging. Irregardless, Jesus didnt teach NOT to judge, read the end of that verse. Jesus taught us to not make unfair judgments and not be a hypocrite should we make them.

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. -Romans 12:9

Good point.

I will note, however, that as a liberal Christian, I am sick to here (gesturing to a point about 20 feet above my head) with the generalization that all liberals are godless.

First of all, many of us are liberal because our interpretation of Christ's words, including those pesky ones about sheep, goats, and helping the poor led us to our politics.

Second, there are many spiritual liberals who are not Christian. There are many buddhists, neo-pagans, wiccans, etc...who are deeply invested in their spirituality even if it isn't the one the religious right practices.

And you are very right. IF the right followed the word of God closely, they should not judge. They should not condemn. They should not hate. Because we are Christ's body in the world, and if this is how we carry Christ's body to the world, is it any wonder that so many people loathe Christians and Christianity so much?

It isn't an insult, being an atheist simply means without belief in any god or gods. Morality has nothing to do with it, in fact believing something that has no basis in fact as a "foundation" of morality is not only illogical, but irrational as well.

Agreed. They are supposedly moralistic following the words of Jesus. Yet, they behave quite the opposite of his teachings. And, you are correct. Just because one is not religious does not make them immoral. Morals are defined by society, not religion. Religious morality is used for control of the masses. Just look at the Catholic church and it's followers. And, moral teachings has been around way before the bible was ever written.

Good question.

Personally, I am quite proud to be a rational, moral person who does not believe in fairies, ghosts, big foot, or gods.

I do not consider Liberals to be "godless," and neither does Ann Coulter.

We just happen to consider secular humanism a religion, and we think Liberals worship at the altar of themselves.

We don't.

You must have missed the memo. Not all Republicans believe in God.
