My friends were discussing how if you have been on the 'pill' for a number of years it usually takes longer to concieve. I have been on the pill for 3 and half years (not tht long really). I am getting married next year and planning on starting a family pretty much straight away. Our wedding is in July 08. When should I stop taking the 'pill' ? ? ?

Yes, it can make you infertile. It can make it take longer for you to get pregnant.

From experience
GOOD LUCK!!!

The pill does not make you infertile as someone said! Otherwise millions of women worldwide would have been made infertile since the 60s and it would not be allowed to be prescribed!
It only effects short-term fertility by preventing ovulation. Most women who come off the pill start to ovulate again within 3 months. Some take longer - up to a year.
I came off the pill after 13 years, had unprotected sex once and got pregnant!
I know literally dozens of women who have become pregnant within the first month.
It is best to have at least one normal period before ttc. That way you know whether your period is late or not once you are ttc. The pill can also deplete levels of some minerals. So the best thing to do would be come off it now, use condoms, and start taking your prenatal vitamins. Then by the time you try, you will be familiar with your cycle again and your nutrient levels will be restored.
Good luck!

It depends. You can get pregnant easily as soon as your cycles regulate. Mine continued to be 28 days as soon as I stopped (and they were before I started). Were your periods regular before you started the pill? Did you have painful periods before you started the pill and they got better while you were on the pill (like mine were)? If so, you may have an underlying infertility condition that might make pregnancy difficult if you do not try hard right after you get off of the pill (like endometriosis -- like I have). http://www.fertilitygal.com/causes-of-infertility.html lists the causes of infertility along with possible symptoms. See if you fit into any of the molds and contact your doctor if you think you might. If you have endometriosis or PCOS, it is best to stay ON the pill until you are really ready to start trying, as the pill stops the growth of cycst and endometriosis but once you go off of the pill you only have so long before your fertility issue changes the environment of your pelvic cavity and prevents pregnancy without surgery.

http://www.fertilitygal.com also offers a free online ovulation calendar that will help you understand your menstrual cycle and when you are most fertile within it.

Good luck.

The contraceptive pill doesn't affect your fertility, but it may take you longer to get pregnant after you begin trying, because the hormones in the pill suprress ovulation. It may take time to return to normal menstrual cycles and ovulation-sometime as long as six months, and yet, for other people, missing one pill allows them to get pregnant, and there's no way to know which will be your situation. You should stop taking the pill when you're ready to try and get pregnant, unless you're going to continue to use a reliable method of contraception like condoms, consistently. It may take a few months to return to fertility, and it may not.

I was on the pill for 7 years, before I went off it, got pregnant in 2 months, and had a healthy child.

But, I did have infertility for 6 years. After my first child 1 year old, we tried and tried and tried. No luck. After 7 years, I just found out I'm pregnant again.

My doctor said, once you stop birth control, you should wait to have 1 natural period before trying to have a baby.

Good luck!

I would stop taking it now and start using condoms until the big night. But personally, i got pregnant on the pill so I may not be the best source of information. Congratulations and Good Luck to the two of you :)
