A thrombus is simply a blood clot, usually occurring at the site of an injury or ruptured vessel. Sometimes a thrombus will detach itself and move through the blododstream. This is an embolus-a moving blood clot, or thrombus. Hopefully this helps!

A thrombus is a stationary blood clot that obstructs vessels. An embolism is a piece of that clot that has moved from its origin to another part of the body, where it is in danger of obstructing another vessel.
