I've always wondered where prize money on programmes like who wants to be a millionaire comes from?

See the channels like ITV and Channel 4 as an estuary of money... with loads of little streams (advertising, premium line income... etc. etc.) all contributing to this huge bank with loads of money... and loads of men with moustaches at a board meeting laughing dramatically...

well say about a few thousand stupid people ring up these pointless phone in competitions and are charged at £1 a go, i think that might be were the money comes from.

read an article in paper where ex hostess claimed that the companies allegedly used to get the staff members to ring up and they would win the big cash prizes and the "real" callers allegedly would only be able to win small amounts.

but are people really that stupid to be ringing shows like this?

advertising, investments from the studio in advance of the ad revenue, insurance policies, toll calls, possible factored into production costs, depends on the show and so forth.

On Comedy Central's "Win Ben Stein's Money" the $5000 prize was factored in as part of Ben's salary, and if the contestant beat him, he recieved a smaller paycheck than he would have, had he won.
