Selective colleges: want you for who you are, based on the schools mission. It may be their mission to provide a religious and educational experience. If so, then your religion and dedication to it would determine a large amount of your acceptance to the college.

Competitive colleges: base acceptance on: GPA, financial situation, academics, SAT scores, extra curricular activities etc.
