It really depends on the child... and how responsible they were. I don't see the need for an elementary school child to have a laptop as they won't really be studying outside of the household. Jr. High School i.e. 13 years old is the earliest i would consider purchasing my child a laptop. Just do to their nature most kids are clumsy and that's a large investment to make for something they can easily break, when a desktop would fulfill their need just as well.

If I had a child I would buy them a laptop when they retain the age of 13 or 14 or when there mature enough behavior wise and more responsible and careful. Behavior wise would be more important aspect so that they don't drop it. At least by them a laptop when there not hyper and more calm. The less hyper they are the less likely the chance of them dropping and breaking it.

My Grand-Daughter is 4, Last year, we started her out on a computer ( NO INTERNET ). She has excelled in her use and understanding of "Puzzles and (Age Rated) Games".

The way the world is working now, It you can "Read" and "Can Not Use a Computer" by the time you Start School, you will be left behind - Forever.

By the time she does enter school, all of this "Modern Technology" will be history, but she will have all of the Basics to go to the next level with out being behind the "Power Curve".
While learning is now "Fun", It is time to "Learn".

Yeah sure, 3rd grade like he says, but personally, I would configure the Internet browser to only allow them to visit sites that I approve. Once they are adults, they can do whatever they want. Make sure you own the administrative account on their computer and give them a restricted one so they can't just install anything and visit anything on the Internet.

I would not. I make them build their own and buy the parts. But, I want them to learn and if they want their own they going to have to put it together. ;-p
This what we did with a friend of mine. His son built his first computer @ 9 years old and installed Linux. He learned a lot and boosted his self-confidence in his abilities to do things. We were there only as Technical Advisors and Beer Drinkers.
