there are 2 recommendations when manufacturers rate a game, there is minimum and then there is recomended
although the minumum is the lowest spec the game will run on,most of the time the frame rates and quality are abisimal and totally unplayable
recommended is optimal playing specs, these are the specs you should allways go by to get a better game playing experience(smoother frame rates, better resolution)
games that will run well with 512/1024mb ram are doom3(http://www.doom3.com/),quake4(http://www.quake4game.com/),fear(http://www.whatisfear.com/uk/)and a excellent game far cry(http://www.farcry-thegame.com/uk/home.php)
these games will run on optimal settings with 1024mb ram but you also have to consider the type of graphic card you have, you can have 3gb of memory but if you are using a old geforce 2 card then your game will be pretty sad
a good all round card that can play all these games and can be bought for less than £40($80)is the asus nvidia geforce 6200(http://www.pricegrabber.co.uk/search_getprod.php/masterid=20222888/skd=1/search=asus%206200),this card is great for playing modern games and also has pixel shader model 3.0,a important requirement in todays titles, all for just £28
good luck mate

Most of them require less that 1024 MB of Ram. That things that require the most is a good video card at least 512 MB.

Depends if you mean, "minimum requirements" of what the publisher says,

ALL games designed/installed on vista

or minimum you need to play the game with out lag and sad looking graphics,
if the latter just about any 3d game, released in the last few months, HL2 i believe requires 512
