I use the arbor day foundation and they will send you saplings in the fall or early spring. When it is appropriate to plant in your area. They are in dorment state so they look like a stick.. They are guaranteed though.
They aren't really free, you sign up to join and they will send you 10 trees for joining. Then once or twice a year you will be able to continue with your arbor day account and get more trees and bulbs.
If you want some that is already started good you may go to the woods and find you some and put them in a 5 gallon bucket for a little while in your yard then plant them.

For the person who asks if we have trees in Texas.. Yes very large trees in Texas.... East Texas anyway... My yard is full of 50 year old oak, pine and pecan trees....
Very nice and shady...

The Arbor day recommends planting in a bucket for one year before planting in the ground in the early spring. You can keep them in the fridge for a few days when they arrive until you get everything ready.

Good Luck...
