Website company has asked me to do a SEO advice report for them. I noticed their pages are cluttered and could cut down on that being busy. Their title and description tags could use work.

Question #1, how many pages should be included in this advice report?

Question #2, Other than meta tags and cluttered pages, what else should I include in this report?

Question #3, should I include links to those websites that agree that cluttered pages are not the way to go?

#1 - Do you mean how many pages should you write or how many pages on the site you should review?

#2 Meta tags are the least important thing. You need to be looking at

1. Internal navigation, and link architecture - can the site be spidered correctly by search engines?

2. Table-based design. Is the HTML structure helpful to spiders or it it confusing and obstructive?

3. Semantic markup - is the page making the best possible use of headings, lists and strong/em elements? Used in conjunction with strong keywords, these can be dynamite for SEO. Also proper use of ALT tags in images - try to strike a balance between ketword stuffing and describing the content of the image!

4. Inbound links are important, as is the text used for those links. Better targetted keywords, in addition to the company name will make a big difference. Remember, it's relatively easy to rank for your company name, but not perhaps for lucrative keywords related to your industry.

5. Competitor research - have a look at who's ranking well in the same industry area and research their pagerank and incoming links. Nothing like sussing out a successful formula!

6. This one's subjective, but I believe if you include too many links on every page, you dilute the effectiveness of those links. This is in part answer to your Question #3. Internal navigation and external links should be carefully chosen - you are trying to provide information and in most cases to influence a buying decision. Too many links is distracting and you want your visitors to make clear, informed decisions instead of "oooh, look at that link" and pissing off to another site!

That probably impacts upon usability, and is something you should consider in your report - you may have top rankings for brilliant keywords, but if the website is a cluttered, hard-to-read behemoth, then your visitors will leave as quickly as they arrived and so much for your brilliant search engine placement!

"cluttered" is a non-descript answer and not necessarily a problem. Meta-tags are almost worthless. They need to focus on the following:
1. Page titles - description and comprehensive of the content of a page
2. Content - Write clear and concise, unique content
3. Links - IN to the site and From the site. They need links to other relevant and respected sites. They also need to seek links from those sites. And that doesn't mean putting up a page with links in it, they need links in their content referencing others.
4. Navigation: no flash or javascript. basic HTML links to help people get around.

Also wouldn't hurt to have a sitemap. The source I've referenced has a good explanation of how.
