The closing theme to Prisoner Cell Block H was called "On The Inside" and was originally penned by Allan Caswell and sung by Lynne Hamilton, and was used in the closing credits to all but one of the 692 episodes of Prisoner cell Block H, and contary to Prisoner.co.uk and CHRISMYARSE neat copy and paste job from this website the single is not actaully that rare a find and is usually found floating about on E-Bay.
The single was released in the UK charts and reached number 5 and Lynne Hamilton actually appeared on Top of the Pops, and the other song played on the end of episode 534 and is heard twice one over a montage of "Pixie " clips then the end of episode 534 was entitled "Pixie's Song", a song penned in the series by an inmate named Judy Bryant for another inmate Sandra Louise Mason "Pixie"strange though the song lyrics are heard in an earlier episode by Pixie and are nothing like the ones heard on 534.incidentally Pixie's song in real life was also penned by Allan Caswell
below again are the Full Lyrics to the theme of this brilliant programme.
ON THE INSIDE
Verse 1
He used to give me roses
I wish he could again
But that was on the outside
And things were different then
Verse 2
We build our world together
With a love so clear and strong
But that was on the outside
Where did I go wrong?
Chorus
On the inside the sun still shines
And the rain falls down
But the sun and rain are prisoners too
When morning comes around
Verse 3
Last night I dreamed we were together
Sharing all the love we'd known
'Til I had to face the nightmare
Of waking up alone
Repeat Chorus
New Chorus
On the inside the roses grow
They don't mind the stoney ground
But the roses here are prisoners too
When morning comes around
Verse 4
He used to give me roses
I wish he could again
But that was on the outside
And things were different then
And the lyrics to Pixie's song
Thinking of words leaves me speechless
What is there to say
What can I say?
Why can't we find a happy ending
Like upon the screen
More than just a dream
So here I am alone with strangers by my side
Searching for the words to say what's on my mind
On my mind
I'm missing you
And all we knew, is there nothing left?
We pay the price of living life
And with no regrets
I'm missing you
And all that you, can't we start again?
Won't you let me talk to you
Can we still be friends?

My favourite show ever! Possibly one of the most famous things about Prisoner: Cell Block H is the theme tune. Unusually there is no opening theme for the series, which also makes it quite unique. The theme tune 'On The Inside' was played over the closing credits of all but one of the 692 episodes!
Sleeve of the On The Inside singleWonderfully sung by Lynne Hamilton (who also sung on a handful of other theme tunes), 'On The Inside' was written by Allan Caswell especially for the series. When the original cast first heard it, word has it that there were tears aplenty because the lyrics were so appropriate.
In the early days, we were lucky enough to hear many different versions of the theme tune - sometimes also featured as background music in some scenes. There was even a moment when Judy Bryant played a very simple version of it on the piano in the Recroom during a scene!
The track was even released as a single here in the UK in 1989 - check out the sleeves! It did incredibly well in the singles charts and made it into the top 5 and we even managed to get an appearance from Lynne Hamilton singing live on Top of the Pops!
Back of the single sleeveThe original 7" vinyl release of the single is incredibly hard to come by these days but you may be lucky and find a copy at a car boot sale where they seem to pop up now and again! Keep a hold of your copy if you have one!
Of course, in true television style, we never heard the full version of the song and normally heard it arranged as Verse 1, Chorus, Verse 3, New Chorus.
Plus we know that even that version of the theme tune was scaled down in the UK and we rarely got the whole of the New Chorus played. This was due to the adverts on the credits, which British TV stations didn't like to show!
Earlier, you may remember that we said that the theme tune was played at the end of all but one episode. Why was this then? Pixie's Song. Judy Bryant's last storyline in the series was when she was snapped up as a songwriter after penning Pixie's song, which was almost stolen by fellow prisoner, Sheila Brady.
Judy fell in love with best friend Pixie Mason and decided to write a song about her - which wasn't meant to be shown to anyone. Well to cut a long story short, the song was recorded and Judy was released from jail. To mark this occasion, they played Pixie's song at the end of the credits. As usual, we didn't get to hear the whole lot through but you can now download what we did manage to hear!

You've got the answer but how lucky are you? Down south this was taken off air ages before the end. We got it about 11pm anyway so they obviously thought it not very popular. I loved this show!
