First things to check are always temperature and humidity. If those check out okay, be sure he has enough cover. They aren't sociable animals and the more plants/vines he can hide in (as long as they don't hinder his getting around) the better. Also, don't overhandle them. They get stressed very easily, and dark color is usually an indicator of stress.

Is his tank in an area of the house that gets a lot of people moving around? Are there other pets he can see? They don't care much for these either. Try wrapping an aquarium backing (or even newspaper) around his tank on three sides so he feels more "closed in".

im not sure if its different with chamelions, but with most lizards, to put it bluntly, if they turn black it means they're horny lol. It may help if you get a female to uhhhh satisfy the little horndog : )
hope this helps
