I have a court case coming up and on the papers it says publishing and uttering, what does that mean?

Uttering is a formal legal term that refers to a crime similar to forgery. Specifically, it refers to the creation and distribution (publication) of a falsified or counterfeit document.

That could include forging checks or other negotiable instruments, counterfeiting money, or similar activities.

Well from the little info you have provided I would have to guess that it means that you either were passing bad checks, using a fraudulent Credit Card, or passing Funny Money!
