I would recommend buying an ipod you can download your favorite tunes in the computer and transfer your songs into the ipod. The thing about having an ipod is you can charge your ipod battery into the computer with one simple cord all you need to do is hook up one end into the ipod and the other end into the computer and it charges your battery. you can make song selections from apple.com and click on itunes to pick your favorite songs-you will need to sign up and register. you can get a card called itunes music card at the time of purchasing your ipod.

an MP3 player you do not want to get because look at all the money you'll be spending on batteries or CD's where they have the songs for ipod

Forget cost and fashion for a moment. Gather together your CD collection and count how many 4 min tracks (or add all of the track times together and divide by 4)
1gb will hold 240 songs
2gb will hold 500 songs
4gb will hold 1000 songs
8gb will hold 2000 songs
30gb will hold 7,500 songs
80gb will hold 20,000 songs
This is based on 4Min's per track and mid quality encoding. In the real world, capacity would be much lower.
When you have selected your capacity requirement, then think about price and build quality. Only at this point should fashion or look be considered.
You will find that a 2gb Nano 2nd generation, is not much more expensive than any other comparable quality make (and sometimes cheaper!). On the other hand a 1gb Shuffle has no screen, but a lot of quality players also include a screen for the same price or less.
If you get up towards requiring an 8gb unit, then you would be better off going for a hard drive based player (unless size is a consideration). The reason for this is down to cost. An 8gb Nano is only @£15-£20 cheaper than a 30gb iPod Video. This is due to the cost of the flash memory used in the Nano as opposed to the cost of the hard drive inside the Video.

I recently bought the new 5th generation Ipod video and it is awesome. Highly recommend it. There is so much you can do with it I can't mention it all here. But just to name a few, you can watch movies, tv shows, podcasts, music videos besides just listening to music. You can also use it as an external hard drive and store any kind of file you want. I have the 30 gig and I have 4 movies, 5 video podcasts, 26 music videos and over 800 songs on it so far and I still have about 18 gig of space left over. Ipods may seem to be a bit overpriced but from my experience, when it comes to electronics, you get what you pay for. Like I said. I love my ipod and have no regrets from buying it.

An IPod is a fashion accessory.

There are better value MP3 players out there these days. You DO pay for the brand name with Apple.

just get a damn ipod nano. no matter what others say it is the smallest machine with the largest memory for it's size (8GB) loudest clearest machine in the world and the battery life is 24 hrs.

people above are right in that you pay for the brand but only because it is the best.

sony is also good but definitely get the ipod in-ear headphones. just perfect. £25 but worth every penny. last forever.

hope this helps!

if you want an ipod, get a shuffle or a 2gb nano. but if you are on a tight budget, just go for a creative mp3 player or something of the like.

No you shouldn't they are an expensive fashion item, you quite rightly point out that they are over-priced, thing is they are fragile and will break, and they freeze all the time. Creative zen or iriver etc. is the way to go.
