Because at church it's more constant noise and not a sudden thing... and music is more calming, and the mumbling of people is constant... but at home, you usually try to be quiet and tiptoe around the baby and if you accidentally drop something (or whatever) it's too sudden and it's gonna wake it up.

Would you sleep better if there was constant music/people mumbling, or if someone kept dropping a book right beside of your head?

I forget what it's called, but there is a reflex babies are born with that allows them to sleep through the kind of constant noise you find in a church, shopping mall, etc. However, sudden, loud noises can startle them awake. When that happens, count to ten and see if your baby can fall back to sleep on his own before picking him up.

I think it's the baby's natural response to sensory overload. They just go to sleep. I never tiptoed or was extra quiet when my son was sleeping, just carried on with normal activities. That way he learned the "normal" sounds of the household and would sleep and I didn't have to be extra quiet to avoid waking him.

Because home is a familiar envioronment and diffrent noises wake them up. But when out of their familiar envioronment they sleep to block out everything, it just too much for their little bodies to comprehend. Thats why when you get home they are fussy. They have to de stress so to speak.

Babies sleep during loud noises. They aren't used it and just sort of check out and go to sleep.
