I have an interview with a hip, interactive ad agency. I'm applying as a writer. How dressed up should I get for the interview? Suit and tie? Suit but no tie? I know the ad agency culture is different than the "corporate" culture, and I want to make sure that I'm dressed right. I need to look the part as a writer, but don't want to be perceived as a stuck-up either.

Show up the day before, park near the building, and watch what people who enter and leave are wearing. That should give you some insight into the culture. Then move it up one notch for your interview - if the look is jeans and tank tops, try nice business casual pants and a dressier shirt. If the look is upscale casual, wear a suit.

Usually in the creative field it's acceptable (or even required) to look the part - funkier styles, more colorful clothing, wilder hair, etc. Don't be afraid to let your personality come through - that is why they're hiring you, after all.

Caution - If everyone is in a suit and tie (unlikely) - don't try to up the ante and interview in a tux! :)

Good luck!
