medium-size company (50 people) ... owners give bonuses each year based on profit ...same amount for each employee, prorated for time employed that year

A written thank you probably isn't appropriate here. You weren't given a gift: your participation at the company generated revenues that allowed you to receive a bonus. Granted, some verbal acknowledgment to management would be nice, something like "I really appreciate getting the bonus. I hope this year is as good as last year was for both of us!"

You don't need to send a "thank you" note since the bonus is presumably a part of your comp package - but it never hurts to be appreciative of what you receive. It encourages people to keep giving you stuff. :)

No it's not necessary, especially since you are probably not getting paid what you are worth anyway.
