Get the absolute best hitters available for the first few rounds, get players that will contribute every day. Do not pay attention to the position as you can plug overages into the normal utility slot in your lineup.

There are too many injuries that happen to pitchers to warrant them to be picked very high in your draft. Leave the closer to even later rounds as they often change from year-to-year.

I have followed this prescription for several years and have done fairly well.

Stats are important - 6 total or 6x6??? 3x3, 4x2...

In general, for the guy who said Santana - you will never win a H2H league.
In the first few picks of the draft take power, in H2H most common stat setttings that would be Pujols, A-Rod, Reyes, Soriano, Howard... here is an interesting strategy that I started using last week for some Mocks - move Utley to the 4th pick - everyone gets a good player in the first round, but Utley is so far ahead of everyone else at this position that its a big advantage - taking him early will still usually leave you rollins or hanley ramirez on the way back to complete the middle and then Sizemore for number 3. It's worked 60% of the time and I still end up with BJ Ryan on 4. But I swear everytime I get Overbay at 1B....I also hold my breath and take Encarnacion at 3B and back it up in the last round with Akinori Iwamura or Alex Gordon.

Postions in order of weakness - or shallow -
2B, SS, RP, 3B, OF, 1B, P
This doesn't mean that you have to fill these positions in this order, it means that after the top X number of players are taken the rest are pretty much the same - and if you lose out on the top couple of players you can change priority and not worry about it until later because all the players left are the same anyway.
With 2B, if you lose out on Utley, roberts, cano and maybe kendrick - you can skip 2b for a few rounds and fill another position with another player.

But start with a chart of at least the top 15 at each position and when drafting, just pick the best player available for any position you need without worrying too much about which position to fill first.

Basically, draft power first. If you have a late first round pick, take Utley (he stands out above all other 2Bs right now). If you don't get him, pick a 2B late in the draft. There just isn't that much difference between most of the rest of them. Be sure you get at least one elite closer during the rush (usually about round 4 or 5). I've also noticed his year that the OF seems to be a bit thin, so you probably want to be sure you get at least two solids ones early on. Good pitching can be pieced in throughout the draft, but do not take them with early picks (too inconsistent and plenty of good ones to go around).

For your first pick in the draft, always go with the best player available. The only pitcher I'd take in the first round is johan santana. Pitching is otherwise a very deep category and you'd be way better off getting a big bat.

take 1 or 10. If you really want pujols take 1. Otherwise 10 is the best because that way you will get picks 10 and 11. Im looking at the yahoo rankings right now and after spot 12 the pool of players seems to go down so if you are last you can get 2 very good players.

If you have 7th or lower pick take Chase Utley, he puts up power, average, speed, runs , and RBI's and no other 2nd baseman comes close. 3rd base is also a position without alot of depth, so look for a good 3rd baseman.

pitcher, a dominant pitcher can take you to the top,but they also can sink you right back down just as quick or even quicker.
