I expect that there will be an initial charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, but the CPS have a policy of plea bargaining and offering to reduce the charge to common assault in exchange for a quick plea of guilty at the earliest opportunity. I would anticipate that this will be the outcome. This will by no means change your prospects of being awarded compensation by the court for the injuries suffered. In fact, perhaps this outcome would be better for you, as it would mean recovering compensation at an earlier stage and it would save you the ordeal of having to give evidence at trial.

Depends what the exact nature of the "assault" was!

If the man merely bumped into you - this is an assault whether he meant it or not, and would be considered a minor assault and battery and most likely be considered a misdemeanor carrying less then one year in jail.

The more vicious or violent the attack, the more it would necessitate a stonger charge with a larger fine and longer incarceration which could possibly be a Felony carrying at least one year in jail.

If your assault was on a sexual nature he could be charged with a sexual battery and this is a real serious crime and a very serious Felony carrying jail time of up to several years at least.

Good Luck!

Was there a weapon involved?
Were you in your own home?
What were the extent of your injuries?
Are you a minor and the assailant over 18?

These are all important factors.

Also, certain classes of people have special protections;
prosecutors,
teachers/school admin,
health care providers on duty,
police officers on duty,

Most of the things above make an assault automatically a felony. All depends on what state you are in too. There is more that can affect the case too. What happened.

OK, from your additional details it will probably be a misdemeanor assault charge. Depending on his past history he could get jail time. There are still the circumstances of the assault. For instance if you argued or if he just grabbed you.
I always tell people that they should expect that the perpetrator will plead it down. He may just get a disorderly conduct and some probation.

unfortunately in the uk at the moment they'll get a slap on the wrist. Only yesterday a top judge said murderers were getting too long a sentence???You run a child over and get a fine??? There is no justice. I hope u are o.k, go to your dr and get your injuries on your medical notes - it will help if it goes to a civil court for compensation.

Assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) or grievous bodily harm (GBH) depending on the severity of the injuries.
More likely the former, as it sounds like you did not attend hospital.
However, if it is your word against his, he might not face any charges at all.
