My wife and I own a Garmin i3 each which I bought from Comet for £99 per unit. They work great, are easy to use and have very accurate route planning. My friends have much more expensive Tom Tom units, which keep taking them the long way around mountains. (I have been known to arrive 20 - 30min's before them and 10 miles less distance on the same trip!) It doesn't have a touch screen, but it gets you to your destination and fits in the glove box or my wife's hand bag just fine.

Aldi are selling one for £120 that's good value. Its not the cheapest though.
What matters is -
what size screen do you want?
what maps do you want?
Do you need Europe or USA maps?
Will it recalculate your route quickly if you deviate from the route it has set you?
Can the screen be seen in sunlight easily?
Can it be set for pedestrians, cars lorries, emergency vehicles?
Does it fit in a pocket or is it bulky?
I would suggest talking to someone who has one, asking these sort of questions and for asking for their recommendations.

I would definately say a brand called medion (www.medionshop.co.uk) are your best bet for a cheap new system. I have lots of stuff from them and has never gone wrong.

Please check with the shop that,
It will not direct you onto railway tracks, deep fords, into public toilets and building sites.
Otherwise buy a map and learn to find your way around this wonderful country.
