Extremely difficult but it can be done it takes time and also patience..

If you have a large pond you need more plant cover so as to prevent the UV rays penetrating the pond as this is what causes blanket weed. Ideally plants should occupy at 75% of the pond. Normally this amount of coverage takes a couple of seasons to get established. However, in the short term duck weed can be introduced into the pond until other plants such as reeds, wild iris and grasses get established (need to clear the duck weed as it runs rampant otherwise).

Ask at a reputable garden centre selling ponds plants what that best plants are for the area where you live. Some plants fare better than other depending on the climate you have.

Exisitng blanket weed can be controlled and cleared daily by using either a garden rake or special implement for getting rid of blanket weed. Ensure that when you remove blanket weed you leave it sitting by the side of the pond so that any pondlife living in the weed can crawl back into the pond.

Any dried blanlet weed can then put on the compost heap for later use in the garden; lots of nutrients in the weed.

All the best with the pesky stuff.

Remember when introducing new plants into your pond make sure they are disease free leave in a bucket of pond water for several days before transferring to the pond.

PS If you do use barley straw settle for a bale from a farmer...then using several pairs of of ladies tights fill with straw tie legs and top and throw in pond. This will look strange for s few days after which the tights will sink to the bottom of the pond. Renew after two months. A bit smelly mind.

If you have a good growth of plants and still have too much algae then perhaps there are excessive nutrients in the water. This could be caused by a single factor or a by a combination of several different factors. A common problem is run-off from adjacent lawns and gardens. Check to make sure that fertilizers are not washing into the pond when it rains or when irrigation systems are operating. Perhaps you are over-fertilizing your water-lilies and other water plants or maybe you are doing it incorrectly. You may have too many fish so that their droppings are causing an increase in nutrient levels. Maybe you are overfeeding your fish ?.

These factors must be carefully considered and corrected if necessary before attempting remedial action to combat the algae itself.

HOW TO FIX IT !.

Having corrected the obvious external sources of contamination affecting your pond it is time to apply some more direct corrective measures. Start by physically removing as much Blanket weed as possible by winding it onto a suitable stick ( a split bamboo works well . Leave the algae at the side of the pond for a while so that the creatures living in it can return to the pond.

If you have to remove blanket weed by hand make sure you leave it by side of pond so any water creatures caught up in the weed can go back into the pond.

Hi, the only way i have kept blanket weed at bay in my pond is by using barley straw pellets which you put in a net and they float in the pond. Other ways, which many are more expensive include having a UV light in your filter which will kill whatever created the weed.

you need a small bale of barley straw, place it in the pond for a few weeks, the blanket weed should go,barley straw also clears green water
for a quick fix, just wave a bamboo cane around the water every morning, like the candy floss venders used to do,you will collect loads of the weed every day,and it will at least thin it out

Go to your local aquatics centre, they will sell you something that will get rid of it. I use one made by oase. Note for Robert W the UV filter only controls the algae.
