Your rods and cones are the photoreceptors in the your eyes that allow eyesight. Rods allow the perception of light and are responsible for black and white vision and don't really pick up color. They are more sensitive to light than the cones, which allow color vision. The action of the rods and cones are triggered by incoming photons. Generally while we are sleeping, are eyes are closed and the room is dark enough to prevent photons from triggering the rods or cones (it's all black when you close your eyes right?) so all light perception in dreams would most likely be from memory.

Dreaming in color may be less common, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Color just may happen to play a stronger role in your emotions and memory than it does your boyfriend. If you remember color in your dream, you are dreaming in color. Just because someone else has never dreamed in color doesn't mean that you don't dream in color!

When I have experienced Lucid dreaming it has been on colour so I assume normal dreaming is also in colour.

Lucid dreaming is the conscious perception of one's state while dreaming, resulting in a much clearer experience and sometimes enabling direct control over the content of the dream, a realistic world that is to some degree in the control of the dreamer. The complete experience from start to finish is called a lucid dream. Stephen LaBerge, a popular author and experimenter on the subject, has defined it as "dreaming while knowing that you are dreaming.

You're both right! It depends upon the person! I've always dreamt in colour but I've read about other people who dream in black and white. Also, some people know when they are asleep (lucid dreaming) and hear sounds in their dreams but others can't. I think it depends on how your brain works!

People can dream either way. I dream in color. I've never dreamed in black and white but a friend of mine does. Each person is different.

People all dream differently.
Some people will see lots of vivid pictures, in bright colours. But with little sounds.
Some people will dream in fuzzy black and white, and will be aware of sounds.
Others will dream with hardly any images at all, but have large amounts of sound and conversation.

Personally, I can specifically remember dreaming in color... I remember all the colors in my dreams.. and it's not just one color, like everything is red (apparently some people dream like this), but everything is the color it normally is (the sky is blue, the grass is green, all that). I used to keep a dream journal, I think it helps to make dreams more vivid, and you can definitely remember them better... that journal is 7-8 years old, and if I read it, it's like I just had the dream the night before. It's very fun to read again!

Maybe your boyfriend is actually a dog! They can only see black and white so they must dream in black and white too!

Psychologists say that we dream in black and white, but because we experience the world in colour, we remember our dreams as though they were in colour.

There have been studies done on human subjects that prove that the higher ones' intelligence, the more colorful ones' dreams are. Also, many people read in their dreams, do mathematics, "eat" and "smell" various smells.
One of my kids spoke in an unknown foreign language in his sleep, and a friend of mine dreamt of colors he'd never seen in our universe.
It's a all a mystery.
Good luck.
