The problem with getting him to go into therapy is that most of the time, therapy works if the person recieving it asks for help on their own. He might resist or lie to his therapist and the therapy wouldn't work. Therapy definitely is the best way to solve this problem and your friend should definitely give it a try. But first, your friend must realize that he needs to turn his life around, and more importantly, realize that he CAN turn his life around.

if ppl are worried (adults) then help is bound to be on the way. the question is "does he want to get better". if he himself lies where he is he will need convincing or the help will go out the door.
if you need to give advice and you dont understand this you cant.
be there as a friend. tell him to call you when he gets angry or upset because it will keep him occupied instead of alone and self harming. i find that helps me.

try to get him something that he can take his anger out doing. Try to get him into a sport or something... so that it consumes time and leaves him too tired to be angry and do self harm. talk to him and try to help him work out some of his problems. He may just need a friend to talk to... someone who won't make fun of him or give him a hard time, someone he can trust, that won't tell anyone what he says.

You can not help you friend until he wants to help himself. When he does ask for help you can point him in the right direction. Look around you area for support groups. He might also want to talk to a school councilor.

does he have parents?

if so, someone might consider telling his parents their son is having emotional problems. parents seem dumb, these days.. ugh.

if he is living away from home, the best thing might be to try and talk with him.

MOST (not all) people who self-harm were sexually abused as children... your friend needs help.

Immediately report this to your school counselor. And find out why he has these problems and try to solve them.
