If you're not doing any heavy encoding or looking for a gaming type system you don't really need a whole lot for general use of a computer.

I try not to recommend the refurbs only because they don't usually come with any warranty and it can be a real headache if something fails....just getting a solid diagnostic could be costly in some situations.

Dell, gateway and the other build-a-box companies usually have some sort of budget model available if your needs aren't much. Most likely something around $400 or so would be the cheapie system but it would at least come with a warranty and tech support.

I think dell also does sell refurbished models themselves. I don't know how cheap they run but I suspect if you want maybe more of a mid-ranged system you might find some options that are less restrictive than the bottom of the barrel basic setup.....also look into if there are any warranty options for them as well.

cheers!

Refurbished is o.ok. whilst you're identifying to purchase the unit from a depended on business enterprise. verify the vendor's feedback rankings and view the comments, and so on. the vendor could have a ninety 9% shopper delight score. make valuable the product comes with at a six month guarantee. For the quantity you're paying, additionally verify the specs against a sparkling laptop at Circuity city, maximum suitable purchase, and so on. the nice and cozy button is which you particularly choose to purchase from a great vendor, purchase a product with a guaranty, and have get right of entry to to somebody that could provider it whilst some thing is going incorrect. for sure, a great, close by small business enterprise that sells refurbished computers may well be greater beneficial.

Try delloutlet.com or Frys.com. A refurbished computer is rebuilt to factory specifications and usually comes with the same warranty as a new one (at Dell anyway). It can be a good buy. My last two PC's were refurbished and lasted 5 years and 4 years with no trouble. (They just got outdated).

I've bought open box items for substantial discounts. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. A refurbished unit may have an undiagnosed problem.

depends on the specs: processor (pentium 4 if good) RAM ( 512MB is good) and harddrive (40 GB is decent depending on your needs)
