While I still have a couple of leather jackets hanging in the back of the closet, modern technology has gone so far beyond draping your body in dead animal skins...
When I get ready for a long-distance ride, I tend to reach for my TourMaster cordura nylon jacket. It's lighter than leather, has built-in crash armour pads at the elbows, back and shoulders, has a zip-out insulated liner, and best of all... It's water proof!
Joe Rocket also makes a good variety of styles and designs in textile jackets and pants for serious riders.

It used to be the case that nothing could match the abrasive resistance of leather but now there are synthetic textile materials that can offer almost as much protection. Leather is still much cheaper though. To match the protection of a £100 leather jacket you'd need to spend £300 on a top of the range textile one.

Synthetic jackets are improving greatly as far as protection goes. Kevlar (as stated above) is one example. Go into your motorcycle accessory store and let them know what you're looking for. Leather is not the only safe option anymore (although it is what I wear and prefer).

I have "tried out" (faceplanted in) a ballistic nylon/Kevlar jacket. It did its job perfectly, and also has weather resistance you just can't get with leather.

Denim works, but not like leather. Summertime, Kevlar or nylon are much cooler than leather or denim. Are you riding like a maniac that is likely to crash? Or are you cruisin' and want to look cool? I ride with what I am comfortable in. People will disagree with me, but I ride a lot in hot weather with only a t-shirt, denim pants, and leather tennis shoes. If it's cold, its several layers covered in leather. Whatever it takes so I can be riding is all I care about. The only things I will not do is ride in shorts and sandals.

Kevlar. Its puncture proof, important if you might spend time skidding across sharp objects, like broken glass, gravel.
