How did Watson and Crick's double-helix model of DNA lead to genetic engineering?

Hi. Understanding the structure of the DNA molecule helps us to understand how it could replicate, by splitting in two along the rungs. This meant we could split and recombine the structure.

It would be absoultely impossible to engineer anything if you didn't already know what it was shaped like. Watson and Crick gave us a blueprint that later scientests were then able to manipulate.
