an ancedote is just a little story related to the point you are trying to make.

If you are talking to someone about the importance of keeping their room clean, you might tell them a story about how you or someone was so messy they lost their most important possessions until long after the item was replaced costing them alot of money.

An anecdote is a short story, usually from your own life. It might be used as an illustration of a point, but it may just be a funny story that fits into a conversation.

My sons are very tall. When my oldest boy was getting taller and taller, people always asked him, "Do you play basketball?" He would answer, "Why? Do you play miniature golf?" He stopped saying that when he decided it was a smart aleck thing to say. To this day when little kids ask him how he got so tall he says, "I always ate all my vegetables."

an anecdote is a very short usually humorous story.
I was walking down the sidewalk and I saw a very short man throwing around a baseball with his son, and wondered what my daughter would say and so we get to the playground and i asked what she thought of the man with no legs and she said she thought he was standing in a hole throwing a ball to his son.
