I know its not specific for your dad, but this site has some plates etc, that you can get a photo of them both etched on to as a joint gift. Have you thought about 'scrapbooking' also, my wife did a scrapbook for my parents ruby anniversery, with lots of keep sakes, and photos collected by them over the years, and they loved it. Most craft shops do scrapbooking now. We also found some unseen cine film of their wedding, and had that put on DVD.

Well, you got your mother jewelry, so why not along the same lines for your father? A nice, understated ruby men's ring, or maybe some ruby cufflinks, a ruby tie tack, or you mentioned that he'd be happy with liquor, how about a flask with a ruby or a ruby glass decanter?

If he wears ties why not a tie-pin with a ruby stone.
If he`s a gardener perhaps a beautiful ruby red rose bush, he will always remember why he was given it, and by whom.
Perhaps a bottle of expensive red wine.
If he`s young at heart a pair of ruby-red pyjamas.(must be satin).

How about something red coloured? Maybe a red leather bound book or photo album?
Or if he really likes whiskey, how about an engraved decanter or whiskey glass. You could get the wedding dates engraved, or just the names and 40?
