When you ask about being open minded with respect to morality and religion, I understand inquiries about: tolerance, understanding, and interest; all of which seem to reveal a substantially positive degree of open-mindedness.

Given that America has the greatest diversity of religions, I see a substantial amount of tolerance. Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, and Atheists/Agnostics all advance their morality freely and in large numbers in America.

Given the degrees of disrespect, honor, and humor which are readily expressed about all religions reveals a great degree of communication (freedom of speech) which is the pillar of understanding. Thus, two of the three standards seem very strong here.

I don't feel comfortable gauging interest in other moralities and religions, but I sense a much greater willingness to discuss differing views on these matters in the USA than other countries, so my personal view is that the interest is somewhat strong here. So from every aspect of open-mindedness that I can examine, it appears fairly strong here compared to the rest of the world.

I think we are very open minded--you just don't see it in the political section of this site. We openly welcomed Jews before we became a nation. Tolerance and dissent is encouraged. We have overcome the stigma of slavery and abolished it before much of the rest of the world. This site is not a good example to the rest of the world of our acceptance of differences. I live in a city with an active Muslim community who report no significant problems--though lots of questions--after 9/11

The more primitive a nation is the more religious it becomes. The more religious the less open minded a person/nation is.

The US is by far the most religious (primitive) of the industrialized nations. Thus, it is likely that we are also the least open minded.

If you look at these statistics you can see that the US is the only developed nation that ranks among the top twenty nations with greatest church attendance

Rank Countries Amount (top to bottom)
#1 Nigeria: 89%
#2 Ireland: 84%
#3 Philippines: 68%
#4 South Africa: 56%
#5 Poland: 55%
#6 Puerto Rico: 52%
#7 Portugal: 47%
#8 Slovakia: 47%
#9 Mexico: 46%
#10 Italy: 45%
#11 United States: 44%
#12 Belgium: 44%
#13 Peru: 43%
#14 Turkey: 43%
#15 India: 42%
#16 Canada: 38%
