Agree, August probably the best month as lower chance of cloud cover, nice warm evenings too. When you arrive keep an eye on www.spaceweather.com for solar flares (the things that trigger the lights) so you know when is the most likely night/week (the flares are magnetic, not light, so they take longer to reach the Earth, you usually get a few days advance warning).

I used to live up north and the best display of northern lights I ever saw were in August. It was amazing.
There are so many campgrounds on the way...you'd be fine to just drive and stop when you're ready. I dont' think you'd have any problem finding somewhere to camp

I know its far....I live in whitehorse. We don't really see them as much but if you go to Yellowknife you see them every night usally in the summer. Laird Hot spring is very nice in the winter when it gets to like -15 and in the summer its nice. Its fun in the winter because your hair and feet get frozen. Also your feet get stuck to the deck.

January, February & March are the best times to see the lights as it's darker for longer.
