Julia,

Sorry to hear the unhealthy fish you have. It's been a good fish to you hasn't it? Fish die for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes it's the fish keeper and sometimes it's just the fish it's self. With breeding fish today and esp, goldfish they are vulnerable to many things. It could be one of many hundreds of things, but we can't know for sure. It could be your water condition. It could be it caught a parasite. No way to really tell unless you take it to a biologist and have it undergo an autopsy after it passes away. I presume it's going to pass away.

I give you these tips for the future. Please never flush any fish. Flushing fish doesn't solve any of the fishes problems other then getting it out of the humans minds. The fish is still alive. Just think for a moment if you were the fish and flushed alive the next 2 hours you'd have to live in.
Freezing fish isn't the most humane way either as it's a slow death with life slowing down. The pain and suffering still goes on.
I asked this question to a fish moderator at cichlid-forum and the moderator advised me of this: The quickest way is to put the fish in as little of water as possible and take a hammer and smash it. It's over in an instant pain free. If you can't do that then have someone in a vehicle run over it. It sounds very cruel, I agree with you, but to have a fish suffer is even worse. Do what's best and the choice is yours. Fish suffering is not a good thing.

Sorry to tell you this but the fish is moribound. He's dieing, end his misery by placing him in a zip lock baggie and put it in the freezer. He's lost muscle control and there is no coming back from this point. Don't put meds in the tank, it won't help.

Eliminate the fish there is no chance for the fish to recover in that condition. Give him a good funeral. Condolence...
