Its a game of both skill and chance, but the skill is not with winning any way you can (cheating), its calling the other's bluffs, and reading their tells to try to figure out if they have a good hand or not. And yes it would still be cheating lol.

Poker in any of its variations is a game of chance. The odds and statistics bear this out. However poker players feel they can beat the odds by being able to psych out their opponents with bluffs or reads, something you can't do with most other games, ie slots or roullette. It makes it fun but unless your opponent is really sub-par, chance rules the day. Just check out the poker tournaments on cable TV, the best players say better lucky than good.

Cheating is anythng that changes the rule of chance. In some games, the application of skill alone is considered cheating, such as "counting" at blackjack. Because skill is considered a legal part of poker, cheating revolves arround more mechanical things. Like getting a look at your opponents hand with marked cards or shills. Or dealing from a stacked deck. In the wild west you would be shot for such shenanigans. Poker cheats are considered scum, so it is not worth the risk. If you just HAVE to win, then the real skill is finding opponents that don't play well, such as internet poker parlors.

Poker is a game of skill because good players are profitable at it without cheating
Reading opponents, picking up on tells, giving off fake tells, knowing pot and implied odds are all skills ...
There is of course an element of luck in it ... the best players in the world sometimes have losing sessions

Cheating is unacceptable

If poker was a game of chance then how do the same few players keep making it to the top. No one is that lucky.
