Why are violets blue and not violet?

They have to be blue, otherwise the poem wouldn't rhyme.

Well really some violets are more blue than others, and some are more violet. We just say they are blue more often because of the poem, i suppose.

Some violets are violet. My yard has blue, white and violet violets.

Blue and purple mesh into violet. Whoever decided to call it that color couldn't think of anything creative to call them.
