My mother in law just told me (at a family gathering) that she will be going to my husband's ex girlfriend's wedding on the same date my baby is due. We (her son and I ) were counting on her taking care of our other children while I was in labour. Should I be upset? She says she used to be friends with the parents and should maybe go to the wedding.
I feel dumb for being upset, but I can't stop being upset...
What would you do? Thankyou.

Sorry this is so long. I should add that we are new to the area and have no other family or trustworthy people around to watch the kids.

I would be pissed. I guess I would just end up saying " oh no problem you go ahead" and then find someone else to watch your other kids. and then when she wants to come and see the new baby I would have to tell her that you are too busy, because you have some friends over that you "used " to be friends with, so you really don't have time for her.
Or I guess on the more adult side .... talk to your hubby about her plans and then he can talk to her about it.

Well, I guess in her own little ignorant way she just told you all you need to know about her.
I would be pissed, yes. At the same time, though, I'd find this to be time to cut her off in as many ways as I could possibly get away with.
If she cannot take care of her own grandchildren, than she needn't be around at other times either, does she?
If you're new to the area, she is obviously laying the basis on how she will be treating you. Try and find someone else to look after the kids, or just bite the bullett and be in the hospital on your own, while your hubby watches the kids. Don't give her the satisfaction of being desperate!
Good luck!

Honestly, I would find an other person to watch the kids.
