For my ninth grade Global class, we are doing projects on the Medieval Era. In addition to writing an essay, I must create and present some sort of visual for my topic, Joan of Arc. It is supposed to be creative- not just a costume or a poster. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

can you create a rider on horseback? Maybe find a child's horse and sit a Barbie type doll wearing a simple tunic (easy enough for you to make one with scrap of cloth) on top of the horse.

Now put some army men behind the rider and you have a fair representation of Joan of Arc.

Why not make a castle? Three dimensions would be better than a simple drawing. Check out the Joan of Arc movie or "Age of Empires II" game for some ideas.

You could also work on weapons used by Joan and her soldiers. A model of a catapult or some other siege weapon would be great.

You could do a model of a medieval castle....

Try to get permission to bring in a sword like the one she used, if you can find one, or make an example of one out of cardboard and aluminum foil (Do some research and get it RIGHT too! That way it's better than just a costume)

Or try this - Do a re-enactment of her hearing voices from God - Have a friend speaking from outside the room while you kneel in prayer and receive His message (clear this one with the teacher first!)

You could set up the stake where she was burned - VERY graphic, frightening and unsettling. Another one to clear with your teacher first.

Hope these spark some ideas!

If you aren't religious, I know where this is likely to go, so just make sure to refrain from pointing out "bad apples" in order pitch the idea that the whole barrel of women in religion is bad. More than 80% of the world (even in the US) still claims to be from a religion, so people won't fully buy what you're saying anyway if it's just saying that women are supressed in religion, with no tolerance for being that way. Those IN the religion never think of anything as suppression (naturally), as much as mere gender-roles with distinct uses. Kind of like men being the head of a household: would the woman in that household think of that as supression? Of course not. If she's religious, it's usually what she *wants*. So a better way to pitch a project about women in religion might be to point out that it's the *outsiders* who see supression, while the insiders see *use* for what they do.

Well, this is pretty gruesome but she claimed to receive visions from God who told her to to recover her homeland from the English. She did lead some battles and was quite successful at it initially. She was later captured, convicted of heresy and burned at the stake. She was 19 years old and had led soldiers into battle already.

I don't know if you'd want a visual of her burning at the stake or not. As I said, it's a bit gruesome.

A little voodoo doll of the teacher tied to a stake with a bundle of twigs under it ready to go up in flames if you don't get a good mark.
