I have a cottage in the country and want to be able to switch on and off the heating either by my phone or computer. has anyone tried to do this and can recommend a suitable low cost easy to install system

I have installed what you describe for a customers holiday home, you telephone the home and key 1 for on and 2 for off. You can also check the status, simply plugs into a socket and link to heating supply after the timer, Or since you will then have two supplies for the controls, better to fit a relay to isolate the circuits. The item that I used was a TPS 2000 phoneswitch made by Technotrend.

You would take a switched output and put it in series with your house thermostat low voltage wire. When you command it on it will let the thermostat control the heat. When you switch it off the thermostat has no effect.

You could also take a second thermostat and use it as a freeze alarm - set it to about 40 degrees F and monitor it using the inputs on this device. If the house gets dangerously cold you can tell that by this added sensor closing, a fact you can readout over the phone line.
