This system was invented by a political philosopher called MANU about 2000 years back so that Land Owners ,Kings Princes and Brahmin's[The upper caste that are teachers Priests and King counsels]can enjoy Life of richness without being bothered with the help of this very inhumane religious decree.
This system has been very unjust to almost half of the Hindus and it stinks.Hinduism has always been very cruel to untouchables ,Women[They used to burn widows Live and it was called "SATTI PRATHA" and later they used to declare the same women who was burnt at the pyre with her dead husband a saint and a goddess and the orphans and destitutes.Although they claim to be very peaceful and kind religion on the contrary..
Indian Govt has tried to eliminate this system by giving them the constitutional rights and help in many ways. But because Brahmin's and Kshatriya's will loose economically so they always oppose it.The problem is that because of lack of education it is still in the blood of most well to do Indians and it is very sad.Even the Great Mahatma Gandhi with a status like a god was not able to eliminate it rather he gave them a new name HARIJANS [The Children of God]
I hope it helps you.

Well, technically- they officially phased out the caste system about forty years ago. Problem is, the society still pretends it exists, even though there can be no legal repurcussions if it is not obeyed. I think it's an archaic, if not actually productive system, but in this day and age, with the access to knowledge that the world has, it shouldn't exist anymore. Um.. ideas? I would suggest you try comparing and contrasting the Caste system to say, maybe the Soviet Union's communism, China's Communism, or other types of government. Maybe you could also compare the transition from Caste to democracy to Russia's transition from Communism to democracy. Also, check out organized crime, and see if it's become more or less present, etc. The caste system is wicked interesting to think about- so have fun with your paper.

I believe that the caste system is ancient and out-dated. You are born into your level for your entire lifetime. The caste system does not encourage goals, dreams, or success because no matter how good you do, you can't move up in the caste system during your lifetime. I think it should be eliminated and silent. Like in the US, when you see someone begging for money on the street you look at them and think that they are below you, but you know that they have the opportunity to rise above you.

It is exactly the same as the American Caste system where the Blacks are the low castes. Study that and you will understand the Indian model too. The low castes in India do rise above their "station" just like a few talented black actors and musicians do in the US

technically its vanished but practically the upper caste dont want to give their position away but no one today cares about caste. in some radical states the system exists as a phantom appearing and disappearing occasionally but if u see the whole wide spectrum its gone though some Brahmin's (upper caste) still talk about it as a privilege other really dont give a ****.

I think its a disgrace. it is starting to die out in the bigger citys officaily at least, but in rural areas its still strong. not all people have traditionaly agreed with it either sikhs for example are very much against the system. I think it will be a couple of generations before it is completly gone.

I think some parts of it are good.... especially where the culture takes care of the beggars to allow them to spend their focus on achieving enlightenment,
In the end the upper class control everything and repress the lower class' not a good thing,,,, unity and equality is the ideal

I read it originally had a lot to do with skin darkness. Lighter skinned brahmins being on top. May still be, but I haven't asked enough indians their caste to find out.
It's insane in my opinion.
