I remember the Sugden Farm was called Emmerdale Farm for years, but after the plane crashed into the village the village changed its name. But what was it before? And why was it changed to Emmerdale? Sad question I know, but its bugging me now.

Hotton is the fictional town, I thought it was Beckindale too, that name was hanging around in the back of my head. But why did they choose Emmerdale?

The programme was called Emmerdale Farm and the village was called Beckindale and was called this right up until 1993.

The TV programme name was changed to Emmerdale in 1989 this was to try and make the programme more modernised with the introduction of the "Tate" family

In 1993 due largely to the soap being over looked by other more hard hitting soaps like Eastenders and Coronation Street, Emmerdale got its biggest audience figure to date, some 18 million people watched the devastating effects of the Plane Crash which was the end of the village of Beckindale and some of the leading characters were also killed off.

The village was then named Emmerdale as a tribute to the Sugden family who's farm was called Emmerdale farm, and the village is still called this to the present day.

Other major storyline followed including "The Storm of 2003" the "King's house explosion of 2005" and the "Who Killed Tom King storyline in 2007"

It was Called Beckindale and Hotten was the nearest town.
It was changed to Emmerdale when ITV wanted to put the show into the 21st century. The show was moved from a real village to a purpose built set on the edge of Leeds.

Was called Bekinsdale

I think that they chose EMMERDALE as they wanted to keep the name even though the farm was all but gone.

The motovation was "When people said Bekinsdsale all they thouigh of was the plane crash so change the name so we can move on"

I'm amazed. I never knew any of that. I thought it was always called Emmerdale - even when the series was called Emmerdale Farm.
