I wouldn't worry too much unless s/he seems to be bothered by it. Since your child is old enough to tell you how s/he feels then ask. Give your child more fluids and fruit (no bananas) can also help. When I was constipated as a child my mother used to give me a little sprite and she would take me for a long walk and then it seemed to fix the problem for some reason. Massage the child's tummy and be sure to avoid cheesy, constipating foods. It'll be fine.

I don't understand why parents worry so much about stooling frequency. If you just take an informal poll of your friends, you'll realize there is no "normal" stooling frequency. What matters most should be stool consistency. If your 4-year-old stools 3 times a week but each stool is soft and formed, that is better than your 4-year-old stooling every day but needing to strain and having rock-hard stools.

Abdominal symptoms are also important. A happy child who hasn't stooled in a few days is probably fine. A child who has abdominal pain and abdominal distension is more worrisome.

At 4, most children are toilet trained and do not like soiling themselves. They also love to play and don't have the patience to sit on the toilet. As a result, they will often hold their stool in for a very long time. If this is the case, then you will need to start a regular toilet-sitting schedule with your child to develop good stooling habits.
