You can use passive solar energy to do distillation.

A couple of easy ways:
1. Salt water in a bucket with a smaller empty container sitting in the middle of the bucket. You may have to weigh the smaller container down. Lay a sheet of plastic over the top of the bucket. Push down the middle of the plastic to make a funnel shape. Put a rock or something in the middle of the plastic sheet to hold the funnel point down. Set the whole apparatus in the sun. Water should evaporate, condense on the plastic, and drip into the empty container.

2. Put the salt water into a black metal cooking pot. Again, put an empty container in the middle of the pot. Use the pot's lid which should be slightly domed and have a center handle or knob. Put the lid on upside-down. Water vapor should condense on the inverted lide and drip from the know into the collection container.

Both of these processes will go faster if you put the apparatus into some type of solar cooker or solar oven. You can make a solar cooker easily by putting one box inside a bigger box, folding the box flaps outward to catch sun's rays, clipping aluminum foil to the flaps to reflect into the box (I just use clothespins or other clips to hold the foil, but you could glue it) and setting the distillation apparatus inside. A sheet of glass or plexiglas over the opening of the box will make it even hotter.

Have fun. Now I want to do this.

Distillation and filtration. Not practical nor inexpensive, but it can be done. You would use far more energy doing it than it would be worth on small scale.
